A more technologically advanced university
HÁMA CARDS AND STUDENT CARDS
Röskva wants to make students’ lives easier. Many students spend a considerable amount of money at places run by Student Services (FS), such as Háma, the Student Cellar, and the Student Bookstore. Röskva would like to see the introduction of an electronic card that students could use at all FS locations. Students could load money onto the cards for convenience and use them to purchase print quotas. They would also double as library cards. Cardholders would receive discounts at FS locations. Implementation of these cards would also shorten the line at Háma during lunchtime.
ELECTRONIC ACCESS CARDS – BETTER ACCESS TO STUDY SPACES
Currently, electronic access cards grant access to the University Centre as well as one additional building of the student’s choice. Röskva wants more campus buildings to be accessible with these cards and wants these cards to grant 24-hour access to appropriate university buildings. The current Student Council has begun working toward that end, and we want to see these efforts continued. Röskva’s idea for the future is that the Háma card and access card could be combined into a single card that would simplify life for all university students. Eventually, all these services should be made available in an app.
IMPROVED SMÁUGLA MOBILE APP
The mobile app Smáugla can be improved in several ways. For instance, it should send notifications when classes are cancelled, grades are posted, etc. In addition, more information should be made available through Smáugla, such as which instructors teach a given course, and time tables should be made more accessible.
BETTER TEACHING PLATFORMS
Instructors are using too many online teaching platforms, such as Moodle, EdX, TutorWeb, and more, so there’s often little continuity from one course to another as far as which platform is used. There have also been cases in which instructors used up to four teaching platforms in a single course. The University of Iceland must adopt a standardized online teaching platform for the entire school.
Computers on campus are often not kept up to date. For instance, programs students need to use are sometimes not available. This must be improved. The school should also explore options for improving access to computers through a better reservation system and an overview that shows whether campus computers are available. Röskva would like to point out that a reservation system is currently in place in Smáugla.
CREATIVE THINKING AND THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY
Having a creative space in collaboration with Icelandic StartUp and FabLab could help create entrepreneurial energy at the school. Innovation must be encouraged, and students would greatly benefit from a space specifically dedicated to innovation.
